Poznanie charakterystyki doświadczenia Pozostawionych jest uzasadnione przez doniesienia z badań, które wskazują, że znacznie częściej trudności w procesie przeżycia żałoby występują w tej grupie osób, w porównaniu do innych przeżywających śmierć bliskiego (Shear, 2007).
